If you use cygwin commands in an emacs shell, your path problem is solved. The emacs shell is also extremely flexible and powerful, giving you access to ordinary emacs file editing commands right in the shell.

Yes, the desktop window is just another Console configuration; you could run 4NT or the usual cmd.exe in there.

IIRC, the Console config for this is quite straighforward. Configure no borders or scrollbar and set the z-order position to 'bottom'. Then use transparency or give it the same background colour as your desktop background. I think that's it!

Exactly how did you get the running log file to display on the desktop? Is that a special console config? A 4NT thing? It looks just like what GeekTool for OS X. I've been looking for something similar for Windows for forever.

Thanks - sounds promising. I preferred Console to older versions of Take Command. I went to the JPSoft site to take a look at v9 but it looks like the domain has been parked/sniped by someone. Hopefully they'll be back soon.

I'm also a Linux user (!) now, so not much need for tweaking the command-line. There's plenty else to "tweak" though (i.e. get working).

I agree this is a nice setup, it's the same stuff I use. I used to like using Console too, but now 4NT 9 is bundled with its own console program, Take Command 9 - which is a lot more useful than Console to me. The only thing missing is the nice look of using an image as a background, like Console allows for, but as far as functionality is involved, Take Command 9 is a lots better.
I'm not affiliated with 4NT - just a happy user.

Console windows are configured via the console.xml files. You can create as many XML configuration files as you like - they should be in the same directory as the console.exe executable.

The <size> element in the XML file configures the window size.

e.g. <size rows="25" columns="100" buffer_rows="500" />

nice job with the setup; I'm not ready to pay for 4nt yet, so I'm attempting to make Console work with cygwin (bash) shell. For some reason, I cannot alter Console's width and height when it starts; only afterwards if i check 'show console' and start editing the cygwin window properties will Console change temporarily for the session.
